Description:

Hanaogi, Courtesan of the Ogiya Pleasure House by Utagawa Toyokuni II (1802? - 1835) Aren't all those hair ornaments awfully heavy? This oiran, known as Hanaogi of the Ogiya geisha house, was the most popular of her day. As we can tell by her position in front of the Japanese zither, or koto, the oiran or highest ranked geisha was able to perform on a variety of musical instruments, and was also expected to have a fine hand at calligraphy.
